Established in 1981, Chickpeas began in the living rooms and apartments of families across Park Slope. It has transformed over the last 30 years from private to public school, from a parent-run cooperative to a now worker-self directed non-profit, and so many other things in between. However, at its heart, Chickpeas remains a preschool that encourages curiosity, exploration, and discovery, and aims to reach the whole child, with whatever they may bring to the classroom. We emphasize parent involvement, community engagement, and a curriculum that is shaped by anti-bias framework. Chickpeas utilizes a play-based philosophy that allows our units of study to emerge from the interests, actions, and questions of the children. Families are involved in many aspect of the school through committee work centered around the maintenance of the indoor and outdoor space, building and strengthen the community, and fundraising for the school and classroom. Chickpeas aims to create a nurturing and supportive first school experience for children that fosters a lifelong love of learning and a deep respect for diversity, community, and justice.
Chickpeas is located in the heart of Park Slope, Brooklyn and serves families in surrounding areas including Park Slope, South Slope, Windsor Terrace, Greenwood and more. Chickpeas offers Pre-K for All to eligible children through a contract with the New York City Department of Education. It is a full-day program for children between the ages of 2 years and 9 months and 5 years. Our unique school setting offers one multi-aged class, with a maximum of 20 children in the space. Our facility includes one large classroom and a private backyard / playground for outdoor play and exploration.
The day starts between 8:45 am and runs until 3:20 pm. Extended hours include our early bird care and an after school program that runs until 6:00 PM. These are billed and enrolled over the course of three periods each year. Chickpeas also has three full-time teachers, as well as additional staff that support the students during after school hours.
