Chickpeas is a parent-run cooperative preschool established in 1981. At Chickpeas, we encourage curiosity, exploration, and discovery. We also emphasize parent involvement, community engagement, and anti-bias curriculum. Chickpeas utilizes a play-based philosophy that allows our units of study to emerge from the interests, actions, and questions of the children. Families are involved in every aspect of the school from administrative tasks to recruiting to the maintenance of the indoor and outdoor space. Chickpeas aims to create a nurturing first school experience for children that fosters a lifelong love of learning and a deep respect for diversity, community, and justice.
Chickpeas is located in the heart of Park Slope, Brooklyn and serves families in surrounding areas including Park Slope, South Slope, Windsor Terrace, Greenwood and more. We offer a full-day program for children between the ages of 2 years and 9 months and 5 years in one multi-aged group, with a maximum of 20 children in the space. Our facility includes one large classroom and a private backyard / playground for outdoor play and exploration.
The day starts between 8:00 am and 9:00 am, and runs until 3:20 pm. Extended hours until 6:00 pm daily are available as needed and are billed at an hourly rate. Chickpeas has three full-time teachers.
Children in the 3s program may attend three, four or five days a week. Chickpeas offers Pre-K for All (UPK) to eligible children through a contract with the New York City Department of Education. Children are eligible for UPK if they turn 4 by the end of the calendar year in which the school year starts. UPK children attend school five days a week.
