Children with Special Needs
Chickpeas is an inclusive school. Every year there are some students who receive extra support services through the Committee on Preschool Special Education (CPSE). Extra support services include speech therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, SEITs, etc. Children may arrive late or leave early for appointments with service providers or service providers may be present in the classroom. They are referred to as “helping teachers” and are integrated into the classroom, engaging with all of the children and incorporating the Chickpeas style.
If teachers believe a child could benefit from extra support services, the parent will receive an email requesting a meeting with teachers prior to the parent teacher conference dates in November. At this meeting teachers gather information about the child’s habits and abilities at home, discuss concerns the child may be facing in the classroom, and explain the referral and evaluation process. Teachers then continue to work with families through each step of the process, if families decide to place a request for evaluation.
